I have M.E. Have had it for ten years now, following an adventure with peritonitis in the late 1990s. It was bad at first, then I slowly improved until I had regained about 80% of my former functionality. Good days outweigh the bad days, and over the last three years I’ve ‘crashed’ less and less – until recently, when I had a major relapse.

So what happens when someone with M.E. ‘crashes’? Well, it’s different for all of us, but in my case it means pain and inflammation in all of my joints, an almost total lack of energy (climbing the stairs or walking even short distances becomes hilarious), and severe brain fog, In short, it becomes extremely difficult to function in everyday life.

There is no cure for M.E., so sufferers are always seeking new weird and wonderful treatments to try to alleviate the symptoms. I’d heard about a supplement called MSM, which was reported to be highly beneficial to people with arthritis or rheumatism. I haven’t got either of those things, but figured that the swollen and painful joints might be somewhat similar. As I was taking painkillers on a daily basis, anything was worth a go.

Last saturday morning arrived, along with the MSM powder which had been ordered from t’internet. I had dragged myself out of bed, feeling exhausted, brain foggy and in pain. I took a 1/4 of a teaspoon of MSM in water and waited.

I didn’t have to wait long. Within 30 minutes, the joint pain had eased not just a little but considerably. The brain fog had lifted, and I was able to walk up and down the stairs like a ‘normal’ person. I’ve continued to take the MSM twice daily since, and have had more than enough energy, very little pain and no brain fog. This stuff has been almost miraculous in its effect!

I’m just into my second week on it, and am told that someone people become immune to it and have to ‘rest’ it after taking it for a while, before going back onto it. I hope that that doesn’t happen in my case, and that I continue to feel these enormous benefits. What I do know is that if you’ve got M.E., or you know someone who has it, then this stuff may well be worth a try. The research indicates that it’s been extensively tested (make sure you buy the pure stuff from a reputable source) and has been found to be as non-toxic to the body as water. There are no known side-effects, but they reckon that everyone has to experiment with the dose at first. I was lucky to have that immediate response – it can take up to 3 or 4 weeks for some people to feel the benefits. But hey, if you’ve got M.E., you know that the condition isn’t going to vanish overnight, so it would be worth putting in the time to see if you get the same great response that I did.

I’d be interested to hear other people’s experiences with this supplement. Let me know!
